Centre Approves Four-Laning of Nuh-Alwar Highway Stretch

The Union government has greenlit a project to upgrade a nearly 50-kilometer single-lane section of the Nuh-Alwar highway into a four-lane road, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced on Tuesday.
The Rs 480.44 crore project focuses on National Highway 248-A, specifically the Gurugram-Alwar Road, covering a 49.02 km stretch. It includes the development of a four-lane highway from Nuh to Firozpur Jhirka, extending to the Rajasthan border, along with the widening of a 6.84 km segment through the villages of Malab and Bhadas in Nuh district.
On November 3, 2008, then Union Minister S. Jaipal Reddy laid the foundation stone for the four-lane road project.
In a post on X, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari stated, “This section of the national highway links the industrial hubs of Gurugram, Sohna, and Nuh. It experiences heavy traffic due to the movement of large vehicles from Rajasthan to northern states. Expanding this stretch to four lanes will ease congestion and enhance connectivity, ultimately boosting economic development in the region.”
According to sources, the existing single-lane road has become a major bottleneck, with nearly 3,000 fatalities reported over the past 12 years.
On Tuesday, Nuh Congress MLA Aftab Ahmed stated that it was the UPA government that initiated the process of upgrading Route 248A to a national highway in 2014. “However, the BJP-led governments at both the Centre and state shelved the four-laning project in 2018, arguing that the upcoming Delhi-Mumbai Expressway would address the region’s transportation needs,” he added.
Ahmed said the Congress had consistently raised the issue in the Haryana Assembly, noting that he had also written to the ministry in December regarding the Nuh-Firozpur stretch.
He further mentioned that he met with the Union Road Transport Secretary on Monday to discuss several road projects he had earlier flagged in letters to Minister Nitin Gadkari. These included requests for interchanges on the Ujina and Punhana stretches of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, as well as a new bypass for Nuh city. “The meeting was encouraging, as the demands are reasonable and well-justified,” he said.
