“India is at the forefront of our Maps innovation,” said Miriam Daniel, VP and GM of Google Maps. “From developing custom AI to conquer our unique road network to empowering millions with real-time traffic updates, we’re excited to introduce features that address India’s specific challenges. By partnering with local communities and leveraging cutting-edge technology, we’re building a Maps platform tailored to the needs of Indian users.”
AI-Powered Narrow Road Avoidance
Google Maps is addressing a common complaint by using AI to steer drivers away from narrow roads. The app will now leverage artificial intelligence to analyze road width and suggest alternative routes for four-wheelers, reducing the frustration of getting stuck in tight spots.
By analyzing satellite imagery, Street View data, and other information, Google Maps is developing an AI system to accurately measure road widths. This technology will help the app avoid routing drivers on narrow roads, especially those driving four-wheelers. Initially available in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, and five other cities, this feature aims to improve navigation efficiency in congested urban areas and will expand to more locations in the future.
Flyover Navigation
Google Maps is making it easier for drivers to navigate urban areas by highlighting flyovers on recommended routes. This new feature, available in 40 Indian cities, will help users anticipate and prepare for elevated roadways, reducing confusion and improving the overall driving experience.
Metro Ticket Booking
Google Maps is enhancing the commuting experience in Kochi and Chennai by introducing direct metro ticket booking. This new feature, powered by ONDC and Namma Yatri, allows users to seamlessly purchase tickets within the Google Maps app, eliminating the need to queue at ticket counters.
EV Charging Station Integration
Google Maps is now your go-to guide for electric vehicle charging in India. By partnering with leading charging providers, the platform offers real-time information on over 8,000 charging stations, including India’s first listings for two-wheeler charging points. Users can easily find charging stations, check availability, and filter options based on charger type to plan their journeys with confidence.
Curated local Recommendations
Google is teaming up with local experts to create personalized recommendations for users in ten major cities and tourist destinations. These curated lists will offer insider tips and suggestions, helping people discover hidden gems and plan unforgettable experiences.
Easier to Report Recommendations and more
Google Maps is empowering Indian users by making it easier to contribute to the platform. The app will now allow users to report road incidents and share information more efficiently across Android, iOS, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. These updates, combined with new AI-driven features and local partnerships, aim to create a more personalized and informative Maps experience for Indian users.
