India Approves Netra Mk-II Airborne Surveillance Initiative Using Airbus A321 Platforms

In a significant boost to its defense monitoring systems, India has given the go-ahead for the Netra Mk-II project, which will transform six Airbus A321 jets into sophisticated Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft. This endeavor, backed by a budget of around 20 billion Indian Rupees (equivalent to roughly $227 million USD), underscores the nation’s commitment to strengthening its aerial detection and response capabilities.
Building on the foundation of the existing Netra program, this Mk-II variant follows the recent endorsement of three Netra Mk-1A units, which utilize the Embraer EMB-145 as their base. The Cabinet Committee on Security and the Defence Acquisition Council officially approved the initiative in July 2025, signaling a strategic push toward advanced military technology.
The conversion of the A321 airframes is set to occur at Airbus Defence and Space facilities, probably in Spain. Key modifications will involve reinforcing the aircraft’s structure, stripping out interior seating, and adding extra power systems like auxiliary power units (APUs).
The upgraded platforms will feature cutting-edge equipment, including Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radars, electronic countermeasures, and dedicated workstations for operators. While the radar setup is designed to offer about 300 degrees of scanning range, efforts are ongoing to achieve full 360-degree visibility.
These A321-based systems will excel in detecting and tracking threats from the air and sea, with seamless real-time data processing and transmission. Compared to the smaller EMB-145 models, the A321 variants promise extended endurance, larger internal space, and increased payload options.
Projections indicate that development testing will commence around 2029, paving the way for the aircraft to enter service by 2033-2034. Overall, the Netra Mk-II effort is poised to elevate India’s airborne intelligence gathering, solidifying its edge in regional security dynamics.
