The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) announced on Thursday that electric ferry boat services connecting the port with Mumbai will commence in January 2025.
These services, designed to introduce zero-emission, environmentally-friendly ferries for the public and supported by the Harit Sagar or ‘Green Port’ initiative, will reduce travel time from Mumbai to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP) by 20 minutes, according to a statement from the JNPA.
The new boats will also enhance passenger comfort with air-conditioned seating arrangements, ensuring an improved travel experience.
These 12-meter-long ferries, made from fiber-reinforced polymer materials, can reach a maximum speed of 12 knots and comfortably accommodate 20 to 24 passengers at a time. They offer a seamless travel experience with an easy online ticketing system and check-in options. Tickets will continue to be issued by the JNPA, the port operator said.
The electric ferry boat services will operate from the Gateway of India to the JNP in the sea and from Bhaucha Dakka to JNP during the foul season, it said.
