Delhi Airport Records 244% Growth in International-to-International Transfers

The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has reported a sharp rise in international-to-international (I-to-I) passenger transfers, marking a 244% increase over the past two years. According to a whitepaper released by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), this surge brings the airport closer to its goal of becoming a leading global hub.
A hub airport is one where airlines consolidate flights, enabling passengers to connect seamlessly between destinations across different cities and countries.
Surge in Passenger Numbers
As per the International Air Transport Association (IATA), I-to-I passenger traffic at Delhi Airport grew from 3.88 lakh in FY 2023 to 13.4 lakh in FY 2025. DIAL attributes this remarkable growth partly to the launch of new routes, particularly in the Central Asia–Thailand corridor. Airlines such as IndiGo have expanded services connecting Bangkok and Phuket with cities including Almaty, Tashkent, Tbilisi, and Baku, boosting Delhi’s position as a preferred transit point.
Overall Transfer Growth
Overall transfer traffic at IGIA also witnessed strong growth, rising by 30.6% during the same period—from 1.56 crore passengers in FY 2023 to 2.03 crore in FY 2025. Of this, domestic-to-domestic transfers accounted for 1.05 crore passengers, reflecting a 15.9% increase.
Infrastructure Investments
To support the growing passenger numbers, DIAL has been investing heavily in infrastructure. The whitepaper notes several enhancements, including the expansion of the I-to-I transfer area, additional frisking booths, and the introduction of new retail and dining outlets. Passengers now have access to improved transit facilities such as lounges, nap and shower areas, and a dedicated transit hotel. Connectivity has also been streamlined with shuttle services between terminals, metro integration, and digital navigation tools within the airport.
DIAL’s Vision
“The remarkable 244% growth in international-to-international transfers at Delhi Airport underscores our rapid emergence as a global transit hub. This milestone reflects our dedicated efforts to deliver seamless connectivity, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and a world-class passenger experience. In line with the Government of India’s vision to establish Delhi as a premier international gateway, we remain committed to strengthening our hub and enhancing connections across continents,” said DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar.
Towards Becoming a Global Hub
The exponential rise in transfer traffic highlights Delhi Airport’s growing importance in the international aviation network. By strategically adding new routes, investing in passenger-friendly facilities, and aligning with India’s broader vision of becoming a global air transit leader, IGIA is steadily shaping its identity as a true hub airport connecting continents.
